Relax! Your annual eye
health and vision status exam
is painless and quick.
Your yearly visit to the Family
EyeCare Clinic is one of the three keys to keeping your health and
independence all your life and it's never too late to start. In
fact, it's usually quicker and easier than the other two health keys
visits to your dentist and doctor!
And many general health problems can be detected early during your
yearly Optometric exam in plenty of time for preventive treatment.
The Cleveland Clinic recommends an eye exam every year for optimal
health.
Your first visit.
Allow an hour for your first visit for filling out forms and for a
more comprehensive exam. Bring and/or wear any prescription glasses
or contacts, as well as your sunglasses (very important your eye
pupils will be dilated for the exam). Also bring a list of any
medications and supplements you take.
The first thing your Optometrist will
do is talk to you! We care about your eyes and you as a person, as
well. Your occupation, your hobbies, and your lifestyle all give
clues to the needed care of your eyes. Your family medical history,
for example, will give important indications for current and future
care.
Depending on your age and eyes, your
exam may include the following diagnostics,
- Visual examination of the interior
and exterior of your eyes both for vision problems and for your
general health. Problems such as diabetes or hardening of the
arteries may show up first during this exam a kind of early
warning for you. Adults will get checked for glaucoma.
- Tests for nearsightedness and
farsightedness, astigmatism, depth perception, and reading
problems for adults over 40.
- Simple tests of your ability to
see clearly at both near and far distances (for all ages of
patients, including infants, children, and adults).
- A test determining eye
coordination and eye muscle function. This confirms that the eyes
are working properly together.
Your annual eye
exam includes evaluation for cataracts, glaucoma, macular
degeneration, and other diseases of the eye, as well as vision tests
to see if corrective lenses are needed. If, in addition, you are
being evaluated for contact lenses, this is often done in the same
visit as your regular exam, but it is a different clinic service
requiring different assessments, and thus carries an additional
cost. The results will give your eye health
professional information about your overall eye health, your sight,
and what prescription you will need to correct your vision, if any.
That's it! Simple, quick, painless. And you are ready for another
year of good eyesight!
