The Theraputic Effects of Cataract Removal in Memory Loss or Dementia

This study involves no cost to patient or caregiver, and all pre- and post-surgical care is under your current optometrist at the Family EyeCare Clinic. This study is for our patients who --

  • Are aged 50 and older
  • Have a diagnosis of memory loss or dementia
  •  Have cataracts in both eyes
  • Have a "study partner" – someone who knows the patient well enough to answer questions about his or her general health and ability to function in daily life.

Cataract removal has documented benefits for visual performance and for reducing accidents and falls. However, eye care professionals experience reluctance on the part of patients, caregivers, and primary care doctors to proceed with cataracts surgery once an individual is given the diagnosis of memory loss or dementia because it is thought that cataract surgery will not improve the patient's quality of life, vision, and cognition. This study is to determine whether or not cataracts surgery does improve these three aspects of life.

If you are selected for this study, you will receive your cataract surgery free, and will remain under the care of the Family EyeCare Clinic.
